European Directive is an alternative history that split from ours in 1959, when a small philanthropic company called WasserStröm Inc. dug up something that should have stayed buried: an alien Marker. With it came Substantia Macabra Mortis, a substance that forms in the lungs of anyone who stays near a Marker for too long, kills them, and powers technology decades ahead of its time.

Within ten years WasserStröm & Murphy Industries shot a nuclear war out of the sky, burned away the ozone layer doing it, fed a starving continent from its own farms, and took Europe as payment. The United Federation of Europe was born in 1970. Daylight became lethal, knowledge became property, and people became Citizens or Denizens.
